Counseling for adults, elders, and teens

When survival and getting by become your defaults,

your voice can get lost.

At Mockingbird Counseling, I help adults understand the ways they adapted to survive—and support them in building a life shaped more by choice than by survival.

Symptoms make sense in context.

  • Anxiety

  • Shutdown

  • People-pleasing

  • Avoidance

  • Shrinking

  • Masking

  • Overthinking

  • Overwhelm

  • Perfectionism

  • Dissociation

can be an intelligent response to a difficult environment

Therapy offers space

  • To become curious rather than critical.

  • To listen instead of suppress.

  • To understand instead of judge.

  • To move away from living in survival mode,

  • You deserve more than simply getting by.

  • You do not need to become someone else.

  • You deserve the freedom to live from your own voice.

  • You may simply need support reconnecting with the voice that has always been yours.

For many people, patterns didn’t start as problems, They were protections. Protections from difficult relationships, chronic stress, traumatic experiences, or years of feeling misunderstood.

Protections — not personal failures!

Your nervous system learned how to help you stay safe, connected, or simply make it through. But now your relationships, your work, your parenting, or your ability to enjoy everyday life suffers.

Have you learned to:

Close-up of a person writing in a lined notebook with a yellow pen, with another person holding the notebook. The setting appears to be indoors.

~ Continually scan the room anticipating, or bracing for what’s next.

~ Stay hyperaware of other people's moods.

~ Put everyone else's needs before your own.

~Apologize for taking up space.

~ Hide overwhelm, confusion, or the parts of you that don't seem to fit.

~ Silence your discomfort to keep the peace.

~ Replay conversations long after they've ended.

~ Criticize yourself before anyone else can.

~ Keep going, even when you're running on empty.

~ Disconnect, shut down, or feel like you've lost touch with yourself.

are you caught in cycles of:

~ Overthinking that never seems to stop.

~ Anxiety that keeps your mind and body on high alert.

~ Emotional exhaustion, numbness, or depression.

~ People-pleasing, perfectionism, or difficulty setting boundaries.

~ Conflict that feels impossible to navigate—or impossible to avoid.

~ Burnout from constantly carrying too much for too long.

~ Feeling misunderstood, different, or like you've spent years trying to fit in.

~ Grief, loss, or life transitions that changed how you see things

~ A lingering sense that you're surviving life instead of living it.

Together, we can make sense of patterns that once helped you survive, gently loosen those that no longer serve you, and help you move toward a life that feels more grounded, connected, and authentically your own.

My work is grounded in the belief that what is often labeled as pathology may instead reflect a person's remarkable capacity to adapt within environments that were unsafe, invalidating, or simply not designed with them in mind.

Together we will honor those adaptations while exploring the patterns that continue to shape your relationships, your sense of self, and your emotional well-being.

I'll ask thoughtful questions that invite insight, challenge long-held assumptions, expanding the possibilities for how you move through the world today.

My approach begins with a simple question: What if your symptoms make sense?

I believe therapy should be one of the few places in life where you don't have to perform.

At Mockingbird Counseling, I strive to create a space where you can show up as you are—without needing to have the right words, the right emotions, or the "right" version of yourself. Whether you arrive feeling overwhelmed, uncertain, guarded, exhausted, or hopeful, you'll be met with curiosity, respect, and compassion rather than judgment.

You deserve a therapeutic relationship where your identity is respected, your experiences are believed, and you are free to explore who you are.

My hope is that you'll leave each session with a deeper understanding of yourself, greater self-compassion, and the confidence to live from your own voice rather than from old survival patterns.

Clients I work with often describe my style as warm, genuine, and direct. Meaningful change requires honesty. Therapy should be one of the few places where you don't have to perform, explain away your experiences, or pretend you're okay. I'll also ask thoughtful, challenging questions that invite you to examine long-held beliefs, patterns, and survival strategies.

My office is a space where you can unmask, laugh, cry, swear if that's your language, and explore your experiences without fear of judgment. I want you to feel seen—not for who you've learned to be, but for who you are. I won’t be another voice telling you who to become—I will help you hear your own voice more clearly.

Therapy with me is collaborative, compassionate, and sometimes uncomfortably deep, reflective, and emotionally challenging. It may also include laughter, humor, moments of relief, and yes—swearing is welcome here. Healing doesn't happen only through tears; sometimes it happens through genuine connection, shared humanity, and finding language for experiences you've carried alone for a long time.

Strategies that once helped you stay connected, accepted, or safe may now be keeping you from living the life you want.

Rather than asking, "What's wrong with you?" we'll explore, "What happened to you?" and "How did you learn to survive?" Anxiety, perfectionism, people-pleasing, emotional overwhelm, hyper-vigilance, executive dysfunction, and self-criticism often began as intelligent, creative adaptations to difficult relationships or environments.

Together, we'll explore whether those protections are still serving you—or whether they've begun to limit the life you want to live.
